Beauty and the Butcher is not exactly the place you expect to find a bargain, which is what makes its happy hour such a pleasant little surprise. The restaurant still has all the trappings of a special-occasion dinner – the low lighting, the handsome bar, the steakhouse confidence – but from 5 to 7 pm every day, with Fridays
starting at noon, the bar-only menu becomes a much easier yes.
The food is the reason to go. This is not a sad bowl of chips and a discounted well drink situation. The Crispy Red Shrimp ($9) is golden and curled, with Moroccan spices clinging to the crust and a pickled lemon aioli that cuts through the fry. The Truffle Smash Burger ($12) was the louder of the two burgers, stacked with crispy onions and truffle smoked gouda queso, plus duck fat papas bravas on the side. The Beauty Smash Burger ($12) kept things more oldschool: double patties, American cheese, caramelized onions, pickles,
spiced potato sticks, also accompanied with the fried potatoes.

The drinks held up, too. The Perfect Pear ($12) was bright and spiced, with Tito’s, Domaine de Canton, pear, lime, and allspice giving it a fall-ish sweetness without turning syrupy. Tokyo After Dark went in a moodier direction. But really, this happy hour belongs to the food – generous, well-priced, and far better than it needs to be.
