Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

Celebrate 90 years since the release of Frank Capra’s 1936 comedy-drama “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” starring Gary Cooper. The film follows a small-town poet who quotes Henry David Thoreau, plays the tuba, and unexpectedly inherits $20 million. Disillusioned by his newfound wealth, he decides to give the money away, leading his lawyer to attempt to have him declared insane.
Capra won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film, which was also nominated for Best Picture. Cooper received a nomination for Best Actor, while screenwriter Robert Riskin was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
