Bakeries!

Who does not love the smell of freshly baked bread? Or of buttery croissants? Or of sweet pastries? As much as it threatens our waistlines, a visit to a local bakery is always a pleasant experience – and a challenge to one’s self-control. Here are our top choices in the Gables.

Recently named one of the best French bakeries in the U.S., Bachour leans dramatically into the art of pastry. While it offers a selection of inventive croissants with beautifully laminated, buttery layers (regulars gravitate toward the strawberry and pistachio ones, $11) what makes Bachour unique are its special bon-bons and petite gateaux displayed in jewelry-like cases, each one a tiny sculpture.

This Turkish-owned artisan bakery and café, which replaced the French Èze Bistro on Miracle Mile, brings Turkish influences into everything from pistachio croissants to Aegean brioche to artisan toasts (like Anatolian beef and cheese). The Nutella babka ($7.50) is one of the bakery’s more popular pastries, with a lightly caramelized crust and a hint of cinnamon. It pairs well with their espresso drinks for a pick-me-up.

Caracas Bakery is one of those spots on Miracle Mile that feels busy from open to close – part Venezuelan panadería, part modern café. There’s always a mix of people grabbing coffee, picking up boxes of pastries, or ordering sandwiches to go. The Nutella Babka/Trenza ($9.95) is thick and generously swirled, while the popular Cachito with Turkey & Cream Cheese ($6.95) highlights their soft, slightly sweet dough.

Madruga is always bustling, known for its freshly baked bread and sandwiches. But the pastry case deserves just as much attention. Alongside chocolate croissants and other pastries sits the guava and cheese Danish ($5), deeply golden with a center of guava jam and cream cheese. Sweet, slightly tangy, and buttery without feeling too heavy, it’s guaranteed to leave a trail of flakes on your shirt.

Façade is a busy Giralda Avenue bakery and café serving French pastries, specialty coffees, and a breakfast-and-lunch menu that includes avocado toast, tuna melts, and steak and eggs. Our choice was the morning bun with pastry cream ($10), a sugar-dusted pastry with crisp outer layers that give way to vanilla pastry cream at its center, plus an additional layer of cream on top.
