An Evening with Deesha Philyaw in conversation with Nadege Green

Books & Books welcomes author Deesha Philyaw for an evening celebrating the release of her new novel, “The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman.”
The novel follows Scharisse Freeman, the wife of a prominent megachurch pastor, as she prepares to compete in the First Lady USA pageant. After years of navigating judgment from both church circles and people from her past, Scharisse sees the pageant as a chance to gain the acceptance she has long wanted. But when a scandal places her at the center of public scrutiny, her carefully constructed life begins to unravel, forcing her to confront secrets from her childhood and questions about image, truth, and belonging.
Philyaw is the author of “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies,” which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, the Story Prize, and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize’s Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. The collection was also a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction.
