Each month we are featuring a home garden that belongs to one of the members of the Coral Gables Garden Club. This month we visited the North Gables garden of Susan Thomas, seen here with her two rescues, Phoebe (left) and Frasier.
Susan has lived in her home for most of her adult life and has been a member of the Garden Club for more than two decades. Now retired, she has been able to spend more time gardening, including starting a pollinator garden on one side of her home two years ago and now volunteering to help the Million Orchid Project at Fairchild.
Her main garden includes exotics, anthuriums, orchids, begonias – “those sorts of things,” she says. “It’s more than a garden to me; it’s a collection of plants. I love plants, and I buy them because I like them and then figure out where to put them. Luckily, it seems to have turned out pretty well.”
Susan says she has always loved gardening – her earliest memory as a child is of being in her parents’ garden. “It’s such a huge part of my day. I enjoy seeing things grow. I enjoy the challenge of making things grow. It’s not always easy, but there’s always something to do, something to look forward to. You know, you bring in new plants and you want to see them thrive, and sometimes they don’t, and then you worry about them, and it takes up a lot of brain power. And I think that’s a really good thing.”
