Silver Screen Mornings – Captains Courageous

The 1937 film “Captains Courageous” follows Harvey Cheyne, a wealthy and spoiled boarding school student who falls overboard from a transatlantic steamship while traveling to Europe with his father. He is rescued by Portuguese fisherman Manuel Fidelio, played by Spencer Tracy, and brought aboard a fishing schooner commanded by Captain Disko Troop. Unable to return home immediately, Harvey must work alongside the crew and begins learning responsibility, discipline and respect. Tracy won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance. The Best Picture nominee, based on Rudyard Kipling’s novel, also stars Freddie Bartholomew, Lionel Barrymore, Melvyn Douglas and Mickey Rooney.
