Once Upon a Time in Harlem
November 6 @ 1:15 pm
A 1972 gathering of Harlem Renaissance artists and intellectuals is the focus of this documentary, built from footage captured by filmmaker William Greaves. Some participants had not seen one another in 50 years. Over four hours, they discussed their lives and work, debated their place in a changing cultural landscape, and reflected on the creative movement they helped shape.
Shot on 16mm film, the footage has been newly restored for the documentary, directed by Greaves’ son David. The film explores the Harlem Renaissance’s legacy, how culture passes between generations, and the artist’s role in sustaining it.
