New Directions in Cuban Studies

October 22 @ 8:30 am

The University of Miami’s Cuban Heritage Collection will hold its sixth New Directions in Cuban Studies conference at the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion in Coral Gables. The bilingual conference brings together advanced graduate students and emerging scholars from multiple disciplines to present new research on Cuba’s history, culture, politics, economy and global connections.

The conference will feature a keynote address, “Getting Beyond the Balancing Act: Cuban Studies Then and Now,” by Lillian Guerra, Ph.D., professor of Cuban and Caribbean history at the University of Florida and co-editor of the journal “Cuban Studies.” Guerra, the author of five books, will draw on her recent scholarship and oral history interviews to examine the evolution of Cuban studies, the intellectual and political debates shaping the field, and the challenges facing Cuba and Cuban communities worldwide.

Throughout the conference, participants will present research and discuss different methodologies and perspectives on Cuba and its global communities.

The event is co-presented by the Cuban Heritage Collection and the University of Miami’s Program in Cuban Studies, with funding from The Goizueta Foundation. Additional support is provided by the university’s Wilbur L. and Jean L. Morrison Endowment for Cuban Studies and Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies.

Presentations and discussions will be conducted in English and Spanish.
