Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara: Estamos conectados

August 5 @ 6:30 pm 9:00 pm

CGM presents a documentary screening and discussion focused on Cuban visual artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, founder of the San Isidro Movement. The program is part of a two-film series by Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora Hernández examining the lives of Cuban cultural figures whose work became the target of state censorship.

The documentary follows Otero Alcántara’s artistic practice and public activism through footage filmed between 2016 and 2021, archival material and journalistic research. It documents events leading to his arrest and imprisonment following the July 11, 2021 protests in Cuba and examines the relationship between contemporary art, civic engagement and freedom of expression.

Fundora will introduce the screening, followed by a discussion with invited guests. Otero Alcántara will attend the program in person to discuss his work and the events documented in the film. Scholars and special guests will also provide historical, cultural and political context.

The screening will take place on the anniversary of El Maleconazo, the anti-government uprising that occurred in Havana on August 5, 1994. The film includes English subtitles.
