Live demonstration: Alfombra de Aserrín

The Coral Gables Museum will host a community workshop focused on the creation of an Alfombra de Aserrín, a traditional sawdust carpet commonly made in Guatemala during religious and cultural celebrations. These temporary works of art are created using colored sawdust arranged into decorative patterns and images along streets and public spaces.

During the program, participants will work together to design and assemble the carpet while learning about the history, cultural meaning, and artistic techniques behind the tradition. The activity introduces visitors to the process used to create these detailed designs and explains how alfombras have been used for generations as part of community celebrations and cultural expression.
