Lezama Lima: Soltar la lengua

This documentary examines the life and work of Cuban poet, novelist and essayist José Lezama Lima, an influential figure in 20th-century Latin American literature associated with the Latin American Boom.

The screening commemorates the 50th anniversary of Lezama Lima’s death and the 60th anniversary of the publication of his landmark novel, “Paradiso.” Published in Cuba in 1966, the partly autobiographical novel combines family memory, Cuban history, mythology, philosophy and poetic language.

Through interviews with writers, artists, scholars, friends and former students, the film discusses Lezama Lima’s life, literary vision and influence on Cuban and Latin American literature. It also preserves firsthand accounts from people who knew him personally.
