Family Day: Little Santo Domingo Day

he Coral Gables Museum will host a special edition of Family Day on Aragon celebrating Dominican heritage in partnership with the Allapattah Collaborative CDC. The event coincides with the bilingual exhibition ‘Many Voices”, “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras,” developed through the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street initiative as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The program also recognizes Dominican Restoration Day on Aug. 16.

Free admission will be offered from 10 am to 6 pm. The day begins with children’s readings of “Plátanos Are Love” by Alyssa Reynoso-Morris and “The Secret Footprints” by Julia Alvarez. Additional activities include a guided tour of “Many Voices,” “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras”, Smithsonian games and a scavenger hunt, hair braiding, a Dominican folklore dance class and demonstration, and a floral bouquet workshop.

Food trucks serving traditional Dominican food will be in the museum courtyard from 12 to 4 pm. Handmade Dominican dolls created by women from Centro de Madres Nuestra Señora de Regla in Baní, Dominican Republic, will also be available for purchase throughout the day.
