El Pasado Mío & Afrocubanismo Opening Reception

April 30 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Join the joint opening reception of El Pasado Mío: Afrodescent Contributions to Cuban Art and Afrocubanismo: Highlights from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection at the Lowe Art Museum on Thursday, April 30 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

“El Pasado Mío” brings together works by 43 Afro-Cuban artists spanning from the 1820s to the present, highlighting both widely recognized figures and lesser-known contributors. The exhibition includes a focused presentation of eleven female artists whose works are shown together for the first time.

“Afrocubanismo” examines the cultural movement that emerged in 1930s Cuba, where artists engaged with Afro-Cuban identity alongside modernist influences. Drawn from the Ramón and Nercys Cernuda Collection and guest curated by Alejandro de la Fuente, the exhibition features works by artists including Wifredo Lam, exploring the social and cultural dynamics that shaped twentieth-century Cuban art.
