Dr. Martha Gonzalez, associate professor and chair of the Intercollegiate Department of Chicanx Latinx Studies at Scripps and Claremont Colleges, discusses songwriting as a form of testimony, historical record, and collective knowledge.
Her talk focuses on the collective songwriting process used by Chican@ Artivistas in East Los Angeles. Gonzalez will examine the history and development of the method, the different stages involved, and how songwriting can be used to share personal experiences, political ideas, cultural knowledge, and community perspectives.
The presentation also looks at songwriting as a collaborative practice that can support consensus building and the production of knowledge within Chicano and Latino communities in East Los Angeles.
