An Evening with Saratoga Schaefer in conversation with Victoria Menendez

Books & Books welcomes author Saratoga Schaefer for the release of their newest novel, “The Last Time We Drowned.” The evening will feature a conversation moderated by Victoria Menendez of the Books & Books Horror Readers Team.
“The Last Time We Drowned” follows Charlie Engels, a broke and desperate bookstagrammer who lands the offer of a lifetime: a spot aboard Empress, a state-of-the-art yacht houseboat off the Florida Keys turned influencer paradise. The job comes with lucrative brand deals and a ready-made sisterhood of internet stars, and Charlie knows she would be a fool to turn it down. It is also the perfect distraction, because Charlie is carrying secrets of her own. Her former best friend stole her novel, became a literary sensation, then died before the two could reconcile.
Aboard Empress, Charlie finds herself surrounded by women with their own baggage, and haunted by the influencer she is replacing, who she keeps seeing on board even though the others insist she quit. When a hurricane traps the group at sea with their billionaire boss, communications are cut, supplies dwindle, old betrayals surface, and the first body drops. As paranoia mounts and alliances splinter, Charlie realizes the real danger is not the storm outside but the deadly games being played below deck.
Saratoga Schaefer (they/them) is the USA Today and Indie Press bestselling author of Serial Killer Support Group, Trad Wife, and The Last Time We Drowned. Their books have been featured in Variety, People, Cosmopolitan, and Glamour, and their writing has appeared in Writer’s Digest, CrimeReads, and more. Originally from Brooklyn, Saratoga now lives in Upstate New York.
The conversation will be moderated by Victoria Menendez, a member of the Horror Readers Team at Books & Books. Born and raised in Miami, Victoria read Frankenstein at 13 and has been a devoted horror reader ever since.
