An Evening with Daisy Hernandez in conversation with Sui Chung

In partnership with Americans for Immigrant Justice, Books & Books Coral Gables presents an evening with Daisy Hernández to discuss her forthcoming book “Citizenship: Notes on an American Myth.” The event includes a moderated conversation, audience Q&A, and a book signing. Admission is free, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

In “Citizenship,” Hernández examines how the United States defines belonging through a blend of memoir, reporting, history, and cultural criticism. Drawing on her family’s experiences, including her mother’s immigration from Colombia and her father’s arrival as a political refugee from Cuba, she explores the legal, cultural, and historical frameworks that shape ideas of citizenship, particularly for immigrants from Latin America.

Hernández is the author of “The Kissing Bug”, recipient of the PEN Jean Stein Book Award, and “A Cup of Water Under My Bed,” winner of the Lambda Literary Dr. Betty Berzon Emerging Writer Award. She teaches creative writing at Northwestern University.

The conversation will be moderated by Sui Chung, Executive Director of Americans for Immigrant Justice.
