Kislak Fellows in Review: Presented by Claire Lavarreda
May 11 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
University of Miami Libraries invites the public to an online presentation by Jay I. Kislak Collection research fellow Claire Lavarreda, moderated by Jay I. Kislak Chair and Curator Daniel Arbino.
Lavarreda’s research examines Indigenous labor and intellectual contributions to the production of Catholic texts in New Spain between 1570 and 1810. Using a book history approach, her forthcoming dissertation argues that these works were shaped not only by European clerics but also by the Indigenous artists, scribes, translators and printers who created, revised and circulated them.
During her residency with the Kislak Collection, Lavarreda focused on woodcuts and copperplate engravings in Marian texts as a way to trace Indigenous artistic influence. She will highlight two items from the collection that informed her research: Francisco de Florencia’s “La Estrella de el Norte de Mexico” (1688) and “La Milagrosa Invención de un Tesoro Escondido” (1683). A Q&A with the online audience will follow.
