Exhibition Opens to the Public: La Vida Es Un Carnaval de Barranquilla

April 24 @ 11:00 am 5:00 pm

This exhibition brings a piece of Colombia’s largest cultural festival to South Florida. The Barranquilla Carnival was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003, recognized for its centuries-old traditions, dances, music, and its role as a defining symbol of identity for the Colombian Caribbean.

At the center of the exhibition is a collection of photographs by León Birbragher Vinkel (1940-2022), who spent more than 30 years documenting the Carnival’s main events and folkloric expressions, including dances, masquerades, and costumes. His images capture the energy and community spirit of the celebration from the inside, as someone who shared the passion of his fellow carnavaleros firsthand.

The exhibition expands beyond photography to include original costumes, video, and music, creating a multisensory experience rooted in the Carnival’s blending of African, Indigenous, and European traditions.
