A Long Way from Home: The Untold Story of Baseball’s Desegregation

February 25 @ 6:00 pm

A Long Way from Home, directed by award-winning filmmaker Gaspar González, documents the experiences of the Black and Latino players who entered organized professional baseball after Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier. The film focuses on athletes who competed primarily in the minor leagues, often in small towns where racial segregation remained entrenched into the 1960s.

Through archival material and original interviews, the documentary details the discrimination these players faced, including segregated housing, unequal facilities, hostility from teammates, and racist threats, while continuing to pursue advancement to the major leagues. Featured interviews include James “Mudcat” Grant, Grover “Deacon” Jones, Jimmy Wynn, J.R. Richard, Tony Pérez, and Orlando Cepeda, who reflect on the realities of professional baseball during that era.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Gaspar González.
