SUMMARY:Breaking the Silence: Cubans' memories of the Civil War in Angola
DESCRIPTION:The Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries presents the first of two spring webinars examining the largely untold stories of Cuba’s military intervention in Angola. \n\n\n\nLate 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Cuba’s entry into the Angolan conflict\, one of the Cold War’s most significant proxy wars. From 1975 to 1991\, more than 300\,000 Cuban troops — backed by the Soviet Union — supported the MPLA government against rival factions funded by the United States and the invading army of apartheid-era South Africa. Thousands of Cuban educators\, doctors and other professionals also served. Yet the personal toll of that experience\, including trauma\, dislocation and hardship\, has long been overshadowed by official narratives of socialist internationalism. \n\n\n\nThis webinar brings together two voices working to recover those buried histories. Anthropologist Katrin Hansing\, who is completing a book drawn from long-term ethnographic research and interviews with Cuban veterans\, will be in conversation with Lisbon-based Cuban author Karla Suárez\, whose fiction has explored Angola’s lasting impact on Cuban society. A Q&A will follow. The conversation will be conducted in English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Isabel Klee
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of  Books & Books\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooks & Books welcomes Isabel Klee for an evening celebrating the release of her memoir\, Dogs\, Boys\, and Other Things I’ve Cried About. \n\n\n\nKlee grew up in New Jersey dreaming of New York City. At twenty\, she made the move\, landing in a basement apartment in Manhattan and eventually finding her footing as an assistant to a dog photographer. That first job sparked a deeper calling: rehabilitating rescue dogs and helping them find homes. Her first true love was Simon\, a fluffy puppy rescued from the meat trade\, who became her anchor through the highs and lows of her twenties. Woven through the story of Simon and a rotating cast of foster dogs are chapters about friendship\, fickle boyfriends\, grand romances\, and the ongoing search for belonging in a big city. \n\n\n\nHonest\, tender\, and at times devastating\, the memoir follows Klee from her scrappy early years in New York to a life built around the dogs and people she loves most. \n\n\n\nA portion of proceeds will be donated to Miami-Dade Animal Services. \n\n\n\nAbout the author: Isabel Klee is a writer and content creator based in Brooklyn. She documents her work rehabilitating rescue dogs on social media and lives with her fiance Jacob\, her dog Simon\, and a rotating cast of foster dogs.

SUMMARY:Kislak Fellows in Review: Presented by Claire Lavarreda
DESCRIPTION:University of Miami Libraries invites the public to an online presentation by Jay I. Kislak Collection research fellow Claire Lavarreda\, moderated by Jay I. Kislak Chair and Curator Daniel Arbino. \n\n\n\nLavarreda’s research examines Indigenous labor and intellectual contributions to the production of Catholic texts in New Spain between 1570 and 1810. Using a book history approach\, her forthcoming dissertation argues that these works were shaped not only by European clerics but also by the Indigenous artists\, scribes\, translators and printers who created\, revised and circulated them. \n\n\n\nDuring her residency with the Kislak Collection\, Lavarreda focused on woodcuts and copperplate engravings in Marian texts as a way to trace Indigenous artistic influence. She will highlight two items from the collection that informed her research: Francisco de Florencia’s “La Estrella de el Norte de Mexico” (1688) and “La Milagrosa Invención de un Tesoro Escondido” (1683). A Q&A with the online audience will follow.

SUMMARY:The General
DESCRIPTION:A 100th anniversary screening of “The General” marks a rare opportunity to revisit one of silent cinema’s defining works. Released in 1926 and set during the American Civil War\, the film follows a train engineer whose locomotive is stolen by Union spies\, sending him on a relentless pursuit to recover both the train and the woman he loves. \n\n\n\nDirected by and starring Buster Keaton alongside collaborator Clyde Bruckman\, the film is recognized for its large-scale practical stunts and precise physical comedy\, much of it performed by Keaton himself. Though it initially underperformed\, “The General” has since been reevaluated as a landmark in film history\, praised by figures such as Orson Welles for its enduring influence. \n\n\n\nPresented in honor of National Train Day.
