SUMMARY:An Evening with Gabi Abrão
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Books&Books\n\n\n\nBooks & Books welcomes author Gabi Abrão for an evening celebrating the release of her new book\, “Practices in Apparition.” The second title from Abrão\, the collection weaves together true stories that move through the digital and the natural\, enduring and fleeting romances\, theory and revelation\, all in pursuit of the sacred. It is\, as she describes it\, an offering to ghosts and gods and the vessels in which they long to be seen. \n\n\n\nAbrão is an artist\, writer\, and digital creator born and raised in West Los Angeles\, known online as sighswoon. With over 130\,000 followers\, her work has long explored the ephemerality of human experience and the language of the invisible. \n\n\n\nThe event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase the night of the event. An RSVP guarantees entry but not a seat\, so arriving early is encouraged.

SUMMARY:Seeing old Florida in a new light
DESCRIPTION:Join Coral Gables Museum for a lecture exploring the history\, context\, and cultural significance of Florida’s landscape painting tradition and its enduring legacy. For more than a century\, artists have gathered along the Indian River to build a powerful tradition of landscape painting that continues to resonate today. Chief among them is A.E. “Beanie” Backus\, the 20th century’s foremost painter of the Florida landscape\, whose generosity of spirit helped shape one of American art’s most remarkable stories: the painters known today as the Florida Highwaymen. \n\n\n\nThis loose collective of 26 self-taught African American artists captured the splendor of their surroundings through vivid\, fast\, and accessibly priced paintings\, often sold directly from their cars. The lecture explores the stories behind these works\, the landscapes they immortalized\, and a legacy that continues to influence future generations. \n\n\n\nProgram 6:00 – 6:30 PM Reception with wine and light bites 7:00 – 7:45 PM Lecture 7:45 – 8:00 PM Q&A

SUMMARY:Diamonds
DESCRIPTION:In “Diamonds\,” director Ferzan Özpetek assembles a group of his favorite actresses\, women he has worked with and women he has loved\, with the intention of making a film about women. He observes them\, takes notes\, and says little\, until his imagination transports them all to another era. In that past\, the hum of sewing machines fills a workshop run entirely by women\, men occupy only the margins\, and cinema is told from a perspective rarely given center stage: costume. \n\n\n\nLoneliness\, passion\, anxiety\, devastating loss\, and unbreakable bonds blur the line between reality and fiction\, between the actresses and their characters\, between rivalry and sisterhood\, between what is seen and what is not.

SUMMARY:We're No Angels
DESCRIPTION:In this 1955 film\, three escaped convicts from Devil’s Island take refuge in a small shop run by a warm\, welcoming family during the Christmas season. What starts as a scheme to rob the store and disappear takes an unexpected turn after the men share a holiday meal with the family — and learn of the hardships they’re facing. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Joan Bennett\, “We’re No Angels” is equal parts caper and Christmas story\, a quietly charming film about unlikely kindness.

SUMMARY:DIAL M FOR MURDER
DESCRIPTION:Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents Dial M for Murder\, a new adaptation of Frederick Knott’s celebrated murder mystery\, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Artistic Director David Arisco. \n\n\n\nTony is convinced his wife Margot has been unfaithful. The affair appears to be over\, but Tony’s jealousy sets him on a path of suspicion and deception that pulls them both into a web of danger\, recrimination\, and murder. The New York Times describes the play as “a cat-and-mouse waiting game\, with enough twists and sudden hitches to keep the chills and thrills running.” \n\n\n\nAcclaimed playwright Jeffrey Hatcher\, known for Scotland Road and Wait Until Dark\, brings a fresh take to this modern classic. David Arisco directs in Actors’ Playhouse’s most intimate performance space.

But their new beginning is interrupted by increasingly dangerous behavior from the eldest son\, Jeremy\, pushing their parents toward a shattering choice. SUMMARY:EUREKA DAY
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of GableStage.\n\n\n\nA Berkeley private school seems like the last place you’d expect a crisis. Scones at board meetings\, Rumi quotes from the headmaster\, decisions made only when everyone agrees –– it’s a community that has thought very hard about how to do things right. Then the mumps shows up. \n\n\n\nGableStage presents the regional premiere of “Eureka Day\,” Jonathan Spector’s Broadway comedy about what happens when four self-consciously progressive parents are forced to take a stance on the school’s liberal vaccine policy –– and suddenly consensus isn’t so easy. The Daily Beast called it “a comic powder keg\,” and it’s easy to see why. \n\n\n\n“Eureka Day” runs May 15 through June 14\, 2026\, at GableStage

SUMMARY:Breaking the Silence: Cubans' memories of the Civil War in Angola
DESCRIPTION:The Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami Libraries presents the first of two spring webinars examining the largely untold stories of Cuba’s military intervention in Angola. \n\n\n\nLate 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Cuba’s entry into the Angolan conflict\, one of the Cold War’s most significant proxy wars. From 1975 to 1991\, more than 300\,000 Cuban troops — backed by the Soviet Union — supported the MPLA government against rival factions funded by the United States and the invading army of apartheid-era South Africa. Thousands of Cuban educators\, doctors and other professionals also served. Yet the personal toll of that experience\, including trauma\, dislocation and hardship\, has long been overshadowed by official narratives of socialist internationalism. \n\n\n\nThis webinar brings together two voices working to recover those buried histories. Anthropologist Katrin Hansing\, who is completing a book drawn from long-term ethnographic research and interviews with Cuban veterans\, will be in conversation with Lisbon-based Cuban author Karla Suárez\, whose fiction has explored Angola’s lasting impact on Cuban society. A Q&A will follow. The conversation will be conducted in English and Spanish.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Isabel Klee
DESCRIPTION:Image courtesy of  Books & Books\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBooks & Books welcomes Isabel Klee for an evening celebrating the release of her memoir\, Dogs\, Boys\, and Other Things I’ve Cried About. \n\n\n\nKlee grew up in New Jersey dreaming of New York City. At twenty\, she made the move\, landing in a basement apartment in Manhattan and eventually finding her footing as an assistant to a dog photographer. That first job sparked a deeper calling: rehabilitating rescue dogs and helping them find homes. Her first true love was Simon\, a fluffy puppy rescued from the meat trade\, who became her anchor through the highs and lows of her twenties. Woven through the story of Simon and a rotating cast of foster dogs are chapters about friendship\, fickle boyfriends\, grand romances\, and the ongoing search for belonging in a big city. \n\n\n\nHonest\, tender\, and at times devastating\, the memoir follows Klee from her scrappy early years in New York to a life built around the dogs and people she loves most. \n\n\n\nA portion of proceeds will be donated to Miami-Dade Animal Services. \n\n\n\nAbout the author: Isabel Klee is a writer and content creator based in Brooklyn. She documents her work rehabilitating rescue dogs on social media and lives with her fiance Jacob\, her dog Simon\, and a rotating cast of foster dogs.
