SUMMARY:ALTAR DE MUERTOS: Una ofrenda a la memoria de Octavio Paz
DESCRIPTION:Coral Gables Museum\, in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami\, presents its first traditional Día de Muertos altar\, honoring Mexican poet Octavio Paz\, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Created by Mexican artists Karla Kantorovich and Monica Czukerberg\, “Una ofrenda a la memoria de Octavio Paz” explores the traditions of remembrance through poetry\, art\, and Mexican cultural practices. \n\n\n\nThe installation draws inspiration from Paz’s poem “Piedra de Sol” (“Sunstone”)\, incorporating its themes of time\, memory\, and the cycles of life and death. Traditional Día de Muertos elements\, including marigolds\, candles\, copal incense\, papel picado\, photographs\, and symbolic offerings\, are displayed alongside handcrafted clay objects\, naturally dyed textiles\, altered books\, and suspended pages featuring fragments of poetry. \n\n\n\nThe program includes an opening presentation by the artists\, Mexican food and pan de muerto tastings\, live guitar music\, and a creative workshop inspired by Día de Muertos imagery. Families and visitors of all ages can learn about the holiday’s traditions and their significance in Mexican culture. \n\n\n\nThe presentation also acknowledges Natacha Casafus for her collaboration and Nilo Verano for the musical composition.

SUMMARY:Terra Femme: A Live Film Lecture-Performance
DESCRIPTION:Ad Hoc Cinema\, in association with Coral Gables Art Cinema\, presents “Terra Femme” (2021)\, a live documentary lecture-performance by filmmaker Courtney Stephens featuring music by composer Sarah Davachi. \n\n\n\nThe film essay brings together rare amateur travel films shot by women between the 1920s and 1950s\, examining their experiences traveling abroad and their contributions to early nonfiction cinema. Presented in a format resembling the live lectures that accompanied film screenings nearly a century ago\, Stephens combines archival footage\, narration\, and Davachi’s musical score to explore questions of female authorship\, representation\, and the Western perspective on foreign cultures. \n\n\n\nThe footage documents women traveling independently during a period when travel narratives were largely dominated by men. Among the travelers are a divorcee touring biblical gardens and a widow embarking on a cruise to the North Pole. Their films offer personal records of unfamiliar landscapes while raising questions about how women documented the places and cultures they encountered. \n\n\n\nMoving between historical research\, personal reflection\, and geographical exploration\, “Terra Femme” considers the significance of amateur filmmaking in understanding women’s participation in early documentary cinema. The performance also examines how these private recordings function as historical documents and unintentional ethnographic studies.

SUMMARY:Part of Fuku x Gables Cinema: Y2K Spooky Season Series
DESCRIPTION:Coral Gables Art Cinema screens director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s 2001 Japanese horror film “Pulse” as part of the “Fuku x Gables Cinema: Y2K Spooky Season Series.” \n\n\n\nSet in Tokyo at the turn of the millennium\, the film follows a group of young people confronting a series of unexplained disappearances\, technological malfunctions\, and a mysterious website that asks visitors whether they want to meet a ghost. Following the deaths of several friends\, three strangers investigate an increasingly deserted city and a forbidden room inside an abandoned construction site\, sealed with red packing tape. \n\n\n\nBlending supernatural horror with themes of isolation\, loneliness\, and technology\, “Pulse” examines the effects of digital communication on human relationships. Kurosawa’s approach to suspense incorporates atmospheric sound design\, psychological tension\, and unsettling imagery\, drawing comparisons to the work of filmmaker David Lynch. \n\n\n\nThe screening is part of a collaboration with Fuku\, which offers a special cinema takeover menu. Options include the OG Sando ($13.02)\, featuring crispy brined chicken\, Fuku mayo\, and pickles on a butter-toasted potato roll; three chicken tenders with Fuku mayo ($13.02); cabbage slaw with pickled Fresno peppers\, onions\, and celery seed dressing ($5.98); and fingerling potato salad with wasabi honey mustard and Kewpie mayo ($5.98).
