SUMMARY:An Afternoon with Michael Jarvis in conversation with Jim Bigham
DESCRIPTION:Author Michael Jarvis will discuss his latest novel “The Location Scout” at a public book event. Admission is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase during the event. An RSVP grants general entry\, but seating is limited and not guaranteed. \n\n\n\nThe novel follows Miami location scout Lucas Sloan after he takes a job scouting locations in the Bahamas for a television commercial and later joins a film production centered on the sugar industry in the Dominican Republic. As the story unfolds\, Sloan navigates the pressures of the film business while dealing with the consequences of a past mistake from a previous project. The narrative moves through the social and racial dynamics of the host country while following Sloan’s attempts to manage the demands and unpredictability of film production. \n\n\n\nJarvis grew up in an Air Force family and spent his childhood in Alabama\, Texas\, Ohio\, Guam\, Georgia\, and England. He graduated from Florida International University with degrees in Fine Arts and English and lives in Miami. His previous works include “Field of Vision\,”The Path of the Tapir\,” and the fiction trilogy “Dog-Head: Tales from the Neotropics.” Before becoming a full time writer\, he worked for many years scouting and managing locations for film productions. \n\n\n\nThe conversation will be moderated by Jim Bigham\, a graduate of the London Film School and a member of the Directors Guild of America. Bigham has produced feature films\, television series\, documentaries\, and commercials for more than five decades. His credits include work on films such as “Black Widow\,” “Spider Man\,” “Ms Marvel\,” “Dumbo\,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children\,” “Magic Mike\,” “Great Expectations\,” “Body Heat\,” and “Bad Boys.” He produced the feature film “Sweetland\,” which received an Independent Spirit Award\, and the Oscar nominated documentary Chasing the Dream. SUMMARY:Coral Gables Collects: Beanie Backus and His Imprint in South Florida Through the Allen Morris Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Coral Gables Museum presents “Coral Gables Collects: Beanie Backus and His Imprint in South Florida Through the Allen Morris Collection\,” on view from March 11 through May 24\, 2026\, in Gallery 109 and the Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition focuses on the work and influence of Florida artist Albert Ernest “Beanie” Backus (1906–1990)\, known for his paintings of Florida’s swamps\, waterways\, and wide landscapes. Though largely self taught\, Backus became an important figure in Florida’s mid twentieth century art scene and later served as a mentor to several young Black artists who would become known as the Florida Highwaymen. \n\n\n\nPart of the museum’s Coral Gables Collects series\, the exhibition highlights works from the collection of W. Allen Morris. Morris studied with Backus and maintained a family relationship with the artist for many years. The collection began with Morris’s father\, L. Allen Morris\, and was later expanded by Morris Jr. \n\n\n\nAmong the works included is a unique body cast worn by Morris after a plane accident that Backus later painted and signed with a Florida landscape. The exhibition spans several decades of Backus’s work and includes his well known Florida scenes\, religious imagery\, and paintings inspired by Oracabessa\, Jamaica\, where the artist spent extended periods capturing the island’s landscapes and local life. \n\n\n\nMembers: FreeAdults: $15Students/Seniors: $10Children (7-12): $8Children ≤ 6: FreeMilitary: Free
