SUMMARY:Imagined Landscapes: Honoring Humberto Calzada
DESCRIPTION:The Cuban Heritage Collection at the University of Miami will sponsor a conversation examining the life\, work and influence of Cuban American artist and University of Miami alumnus Humberto Calzada\, who lived from 1944 to 2025. \n\n\n\nCalzada was known for paintings that explored architecture\, memory and place. His work often drew from his childhood in Havana\, including the houses he sketched while traveling to Saint George School in El Vedado. \n\n\n\nAfter his family moved to Miami in 1960 following the Cuban Revolution\, Calzada attended Coral Gables Senior High School. He later studied at the University of Miami\, earning a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering in 1966 and an M.B.A. in 1968. \n\n\n\nCalzada worked at IBM in Boca Raton before becoming a general contractor and building homes throughout Miami-Dade County. During this period\, he continued painting and developed a body of work inspired by the architecture of Colonial and Neoclassical Havana\, as well as the colors and textures of the Caribbean. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will feature Carol Damian of the Florida International University School of Art and Art History\, Katrin Hansing of the Baruch College Weissman School of Arts and Sciences\, and independent scholar\, filmmaker and author Eduardo Montes-Bradley. \n\n\n\nVictor Deupi of the University of Miami School of Architecture will moderate the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:The Coral Gables Museum will host a special edition of Family Day on Aragon celebrating Dominican heritage in partnership with the Allapattah Collaborative CDC. The event coincides with the bilingual exhibition ‘Many Voices”\, “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras\,” developed through the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street initiative as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The program also recognizes Dominican Restoration Day on Aug. 16. \n\n\n\nFree admission will be offered from 10 am to 6 pm. The day begins with children’s readings of “Plátanos Are Love” by Alyssa Reynoso-Morris and “The Secret Footprints” by Julia Alvarez. Additional activities include a guided tour of “Many Voices\,” “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras”\, Smithsonian games and a scavenger hunt\, hair braiding\, a Dominican folklore dance class and demonstration\, and a floral bouquet workshop. \n\n\n\nFood trucks serving traditional Dominican food will be in the museum courtyard from 12 to 4 pm. Handmade Dominican dolls created by women from Centro de Madres Nuestra Señora de Regla in Baní\, Dominican Republic\, will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

DESCRIPTION:Michael Mann’s 1986 thriller “Manhunter” returns in a new 4K Final Cut marking the film’s 40th anniversary. \n\n\n\nWilliam Petersen stars as a retired criminal profiler who reluctantly returns to the FBI to help track down a serial killer targeting families. During the investigation\, he consults imprisoned psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecktor\, played by Brian Cox. The cast also includes Tom Noonan and three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen. \n\n\n\nWritten and directed by Mann\, “Manhunter” is an adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris’s four novels featuring Hannibal Lecktor. The film was Mann’s third feature as both writer and director. \n\n\n\nThe new 4K Final Cut was overseen by Mann and features restored picture and sound. The original 35mm negative\, along with several shots sourced from an interpositive\, was scanned in 4K and digitally restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. The restoration follows a new reference edit completed by Mann.

The collection looks at questions of biological family\, identity\, inheritance and how new information can change a person’s understanding of kinship. \n\n\n\nCancio-Bello is the author of “Hour of the Ox\,” winner of the Donald Hall Prize for Poetry\, and co-translator of Yi Won’s “The World’s Lightest Motorcycle.” She is also a co-founder of the Adoptee Literary Festival and serves as a programs and marketing supervisor for Miami Book Fair.
