SUMMARY:Teófilo Victoria Lecture Series III featuring Jorge A. Sánchez de Ortigosa
DESCRIPTION:The third installment of the Teofilo Victoria Series features Jorge A. Sanchez\, Principal and President of SMI Landscape Architecture\, LLC. \n\n\n\nSanchez built his practice around a philosophy that merges a botanical garden approach with historic and classical formal garden design\, producing landscapes that are both visually distinctive and deeply considered. SMI is recognized not only for original design work but also for the preservation and restoration of historic landscapes. The firm’s projects have been published in national magazines and documented in three books: The Civilized Jungle\, The Making of Three Gardens\, and The Private Gardens of SMI Landscape Architecture. \n\n\n\nSanchez has received some of the field’s most respected honors\, including the Arthur Ross Award in Landscape Architecture in 2010\, recognized for bringing classical structure to the abundance of tropical gardens\, and the Thomas N. Armstrong III Award in Landscape Design from the New York School of Interior Design. He has served on zoning and architectural boards for the Town of Palm Beach and currently serves as a Director of the Garden Conservancy.

SUMMARY:Miles Davis's Centennial Revue | Frost Studio Jazz Band
DESCRIPTION:Professor Etienne Charles leads the Frost Studio Jazz Band through a century of Miles Davis at Gusman Concert Hall. The program traces Davis’s evolution from his bebop beginnings with Charlie Parker through the cool lyricism of “Kind of Blue\,” the orchestral scope of “Sketches of Spain\,” the electric experimentation of “Bitches Brew\,” and the funk-driven sound of his final band in 1991. The concert marks Davis’s centennial year and covers the full arc of a career that reshaped jazz and popular music from the 1950s through the 1990s. \n\n\n\nEtienne Charles is a professor at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. The Frost Studio Jazz Band is an ensemble drawn from the school’s program.

SUMMARY:Broken Voices
DESCRIPTION:“Broken Voices” is a coming-of-age drama set in early 1990s Prague\, following thirteen-year-old Karolína as she earns a coveted place in a world-famous girls’ choir — joining her older sister among a cohort of fiercely driven young talents. When Karolína’s voice draws the attention of the admired and enigmatic choirmaster\, his favoritism feels\, at first\, like a hard-won triumph. But as his attention deepens into something more troubling\, the distinction between privilege and exploitation begins to unravel. \n\n\n\nInspired by the real-world Bambini di Praga case\, the film examines the dynamics of power\, ambition\, and institutional silence with unflinching care. It neither sensationalizes nor looks away\, tracing instead the interior landscape of a girl navigating resentment from peers and her sister\, misplaced trust in an authority figure\, and the slow\, painful education of understanding what has been done to her. \n\n\n\nKateřina Falbrová delivers a performance of striking restraint and depth as Karolína — capturing the way a child can simultaneously understand too much and not enough. Her work earned a Special Jury Mention at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, where the film also took home the Europa Cinemas Label Award.

SUMMARY:Cookie Queens
DESCRIPTION:Cookie Queens is a coming-of-age documentary about one of America’s most beloved annual rituals: Girl Scout Cookie season. Behind the Thin Mints and the badges lies an $800 million business\, and director Alysa Nahmias places four girls\, ages 5 to 12\, at the center of it. \n\n\n\nThe film follows the girls and their families through the annual selling season with candor and warmth\, capturing the real pressures underneath the smiles: long hours\, ambitious sales goals\, and the weight of high expectations. For these girls\, selling cookies is less about sisterhood and more about a first encounter with commercialism\, competition\, and what it means to succeed. Nahmias balances the humor and heart of childhood with an honest look at what America asks of its youngest participants.

SUMMARY:Surround Sound
DESCRIPTION:Seraphic Fire closes out its celebratory season with a concert experience rooted in the grand polychoral tradition of Venice’s Basilica of San Marco. Conductor Patrick Dupre Quigley leads the full choir alongside a period instrument quartet in a program that places the audience at the center of the performance\, with singers positioned throughout the room in a true surround-sound arrangement. \n\n\n\nThe concert features music by Claudio Monteverdi\, including his Ave Regina\, performed in the style of the layered\, multi-directional sound that defined sacred music in Renaissance Venice. This is not a traditional concert setup. The polychoral format means sound comes from every corner of the room\, putting listeners inside the music rather than in front of it. \n\n\n\nA Pre-Concert Conversation with Dr. James K. Bass will take place one hour before the performance.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Patrick Radden Keefe
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Radden Keefe\, staff writer at The New Yorker and author of multiple New York Times bestsellers\, will appear in support of his newest book\, “London Falling\,” a true-crime investigation into corruption\, grief\, and the darker side of one of the world’s most iconic cities. \n\n\n\nThe book centers on a real mystery: a 19-year-old named Zac Brettler\, from a close family\, who was living a secret life posing as the heir to a Russian oligarch’s fortune before falling from the balcony of a luxury apartment building into the Thames. While police ruled it a suicide and largely closed the case\, Keefe’s investigation points to something far more troubling. The story pulls back the curtain on London’s financial underworld\, where dirty money from oligarchs\, arms dealers\, and drug traffickers gets laundered with the help of lawyers\, bankers\, and complicit institutions. \n\n\n\nAt the center of it all is a family trying to make sense of their son’s death and the secret life he hid from them. It’s that search for answers and understanding that gives the book its emotional weight. \n\n\n\nKeefe is the author of “Say Nothing\,” “Empire of Pain\,” and “Rogues\,” and the creator of the podcast Wind of Change. His work has earned a Guggenheim Fellowship\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, and the Baillie Gifford Prize\, among others.
