DESCRIPTION:he Coral Gables Museum will host a special edition of Family Day on Aragon celebrating Dominican heritage in partnership with the Allapattah Collaborative CDC. The event coincides with the bilingual exhibition ‘Many Voices”\, “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras\,” developed through the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street initiative as part of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States. The program also recognizes Dominican Restoration Day on Aug. 16. \n\n\n\nFree admission will be offered from 10 am to 6 pm. The day begins with children’s readings of “Plátanos Are Love” by Alyssa Reynoso-Morris and “The Secret Footprints” by Julia Alvarez. Additional activities include a guided tour of “Many Voices\,” “One Nation: En Nuestras Palabras”\, Smithsonian games and a scavenger hunt\, hair braiding\, a Dominican folklore dance class and demonstration\, and a floral bouquet workshop. \n\n\n\nFood trucks serving traditional Dominican food will be in the museum courtyard from 12 to 4 pm. Handmade Dominican dolls created by women from Centro de Madres Nuestra Señora de Regla in Baní\, Dominican Republic\, will also be available for purchase throughout the day.

DESCRIPTION:Taiwanese bassist and composer Vincent Hsu will perform at The Burrow with drummer Dafnis Prieto and pianist Martin Bejerano. The program will feature Hsu’s blend of modern jazz\, Afro-Cuban rhythms and Taiwanese musical traditions. \n\n\n\nHsu studied at New York University and worked with jazz musicians including Andy González and Cecil McBee. He has performed at the Festival Internacional Jazz Plaza in Havana\, the Madrid International Jazz Festival\, Blue Note New York and the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. His album “Music for the River Jazz Suite” has also been recognized by DownBeat Magazine. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 8 pm\, and the performance begins at 9 pm. Seating is assigned on a first come\, first served basis. Guests may be asked to share a table with other attendees. \n\n\n\nTickets include unlimited house cocktails\, wine\, sparkling wine and spirits. DESCRIPTION:This beginner photography workshop introduces the fundamentals of still life photography in a studio setting. Participants will learn how to adjust camera settings\, use flash and continuous lighting\, compose an image and work with studio equipment. \n\n\n\nThe class includes hands-on practice designed to help participants create properly lit still life photographs. Mirrorless cameras\, DSLR cameras and phones are welcome. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be led by Carlos V. Causo\, an adjunct lecturer at Florida International University and a photography instructor at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Causo holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from Florida International University and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography\, Video and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts.

SUMMARY:Gallery Night | Ken Lyon: suspensions\, tensions + illusions
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Ken Lyon will present a month-long exhibition featuring 10 images created over a 10-year period in North America\, South America and Europe. \n\n\n\nThe photographs explore mystery and illusion through scenes that range from direct to more subtle. Each image was captured digitally and printed on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth paper. The collection was also submitted to the 2026 Photolucida Critical Mass photography competition. \n\n\n\nLyon has worked in photography for nearly 60 years\, beginning in a home darkroom in Worcester\, Massachusetts. He later attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University before pursuing a career as a chef and restaurateur. Over the past 15 years\, he returned to photography and now works primarily in black and white. \n\n\n\nHis current practice combines digital image capture with hand-pulled platinum and palladium printing\, bringing together digital and analog processes with an emphasis on prints made on paper. \n\n\n\nThe Gallery Night opening is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Author Annie Jacobsen will discuss her new book\, “Biological War\,” during a ticketed event co-presented by the World Affairs Council and the University of Miami’s Hanley Democracy Center. \n\n\n\nThe book examines how a laboratory accident or biological attack could lead to a global pandemic and widespread social collapse. Drawing from interviews with political\, governmental\, medical and military experts\, Jacobsen traces the possible hours\, days and weeks following the release of a biological agent. The book follows her previous bestseller\, “Nuclear War\,” and continues her reporting on national security\, government preparedness and large-scale threats. \n\n\n\nJacobsen is also the author of “Area 51\,” “Operation Paperclip\,” “First Platoon” and “The Pentagon’s Brain\,” which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in history. She previously worked as a contributing editor at the Los Angeles Times Magazine. \n\n\n\nThe conversation will be moderated by Pamela Berkowsky\, president of Blue Sapphire Strategies and co-founder of the South Florida Defense Alliance and South Florida Women in Defense. Berkowsky previously held senior positions at the Pentagon and served as Assistant Chief of Staff to Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen. Her work has focused on national security\, domestic terrorism preparedness\, bioterrorism and homeland defense.

The program is part of a two-film series by Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora Hernández examining the lives of Cuban cultural figures whose work became the target of state censorship. \n\n\n\nThe documentary follows Otero Alcántara’s artistic practice and public activism through footage filmed between 2016 and 2021\, archival material and journalistic research. It documents events leading to his arrest and imprisonment following the July 11\, 2021 protests in Cuba and examines the relationship between contemporary art\, civic engagement and freedom of expression. \n\n\n\nFundora will introduce the screening\, followed by a discussion with invited guests. Otero Alcántara will attend the program in person to discuss his work and the events documented in the film. Scholars and special guests will also provide historical\, cultural and political context. \n\n\n\nThe screening will take place on the anniversary of El Maleconazo\, the anti-government uprising that occurred in Havana on August 5\, 1994. The film includes English subtitles.

It features a book by Terrence McNally\, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens\, the Tony Award-winning creators associated with Ragtime and Once on This Island. \n\n\n\nThe production is inspired by the Twentieth Century Fox motion pictures through a special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical. It is based on the play by Marcelle Maurette\, as adapted by Guy Bolton.
