SUMMARY:Silver Screen Mornings: Bigger Than Life
DESCRIPTION:After collapsing in class\, schoolteacher Ed Avery is hospitalized and diagnosed with a fatal arterial condition. Doctors estimate he has only months to live. In an effort to extend his life\, Ed agrees to undergo an experimental cortisone treatment. The results appear immediate and dramatic\, restoring his physical health and allowing him to return home. \n\n\n\nSoon after\, however\, his wife Lou begins to observe pronounced changes in his behavior\, including severe mood swings and erratic decision-making. His colleague and friend Wally also notices the shift and eventually uncovers that Ed has been misusing the prescribed cortisone. The film follows the unraveling of Ed’s mental state and the strain placed on his family as a result of the treatment’s psychological side effects.

A native of São Paulo\, Brazil\, he began playing guitar at age six and was working as a professional studio musician by his early teens. His career has since spanned collaborations throughout Brazil and internationally. \n\n\n\nHis recordings have received consistent critical recognition. Albums including “Meia Noite Meio Dia\,” “Chico Pinheiro\,” and “NOVA” were named among the top Brazilian albums of their release years by major national publications. His 2010 release “There’s a Storm Inside\,” featuring Dianne Reeves and Bob Mintzer\, was released in 35 countries and recognized by international music publications as one of the year’s best\, earning multiple Latin jazz awards. The program offers an introduction to the principles and techniques of Ikebana\, the Japanese art of floral design. \n\n\n\nDuring the demonstration\, Iwata and Ishii-Sloane will create eight Ikebana arrangements\, each paired with handcrafted ceramic vessels curated by James Herring of the Ceramic League. \n\n\n\nWorkshop participants will be provided with flowers and pots selected for the session and will create their own Ikebana arrangements under the guidance of the artists. Completed arrangements may be taken home at the conclusion of the workshop.

The lecture features Victor Dover\, a nationally recognized leader in city planning\, neighborhood design\, and street design. \n\n\n\nDover has led more than 200 planning charrettes and lectures focused on livable communities and sustainable development. He is the coauthor of “Street Design: The Secret to Great Cities and Towns” with John Massengale\, a widely cited work in contemporary urban planning. A Fellow of both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Congress for the New Urbanism\, Dover has served as national chair of CNU and is a recipient of the Seaside Prize and the John Nolen Medal for his contributions to urbanism. \n\n\n\nAn adjunct faculty member at the University of Miami\, Dover has also served as president of the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade\, as a board member of the National Recreation and Parks Association\, and currently serves on the board of the Tropical Audubon Society. The lecture will focus on strategies for creating vibrant\, sustainable\, and livable communities through thoughtful design and planning.
