SUMMARY:My Darling Clementine
DESCRIPTION:An 80th anniversary screening of “My Darling Clementine\,” directed by John Ford\, presents one of the defining works of the American Western. The film follows Wyatt Earp\, portrayed by Henry Fonda\, as he arrives in Tombstone and takes on the role of marshal after the murder of his brother and the theft of their cattle. \n\n\n\nBased loosely on accounts associated with Wyatt Earp\, the film focuses on the establishment of law in a frontier town\, balancing elements of drama\, character study\, and understated humor. Ford’s direction emphasizes composition\, pacing\, and atmosphere\, contributing to the film’s lasting influence within the genre. \n\n\n\nOften cited alongside other landmark Westerns such as “The Searchers” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance\,” the film remains a reference point for directors including Steven Spielberg. This screening offers an opportunity to revisit Ford’s interpretation of the Earp story and its place in American cinema history.

SUMMARY:Son of Nobody | An Evening with Yann Martel\, author of The Life of Pi
DESCRIPTION:Join a discussion on “Son of Nobody” by Yann Martel\, a novel that moves between ancient Greece and modern academia. The book centers on The Psoad\, a reconstructed Greek epic in free verse that follows Psoas of Midea\, a goatherd’s son who leaves his family to fight in the Trojan War. \n\n\n\nIn the present day\, a Canadian scholar studying at Oxford uncovers fragments of the poem and becomes its sole translator. As he interprets the text\, he begins to find personal meaning within it\, addressing his daughter through notes and commentary tied to the ancient narrative. The novel shifts between the plains of Troy and contemporary Oxford\, examining how stories are preserved\, translated\, and reinterpreted over time. \n\n\n\nMartel\, known for “Life of Pi\,” brings together mythology\, history\, and literary analysis in a work that explores authorship\, memory\, and the relationship between past and present.

SUMMARY:Reds
DESCRIPTION:Selected by Mitchell Kaplan\, Reds arrives in a brand new 4K restoration for a landmark screening of Warren Beatty’s sweeping historical epic. The film follows the volatile romance between activist journalists Louise Bryant and John Reed\, set against the upheaval of the early twentieth century. From the outbreak of WWI to Louise’s assignment in France\, through Reed’s radicalization in Russia and his disillusionment with the Soviet propaganda machine\, the film moves between intimate personal drama and world-altering historical forces. Beatty’s ambitious blend of dramatic narrative and interviews with the era’s major social radicals remains one of American cinema’s most singular achievements.

SUMMARY:Undercurrents | Frost Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:The Frost Symphony Orchestra brings its season to a close with a program that reaches into one of music history’s most charged chapters. The evening opens with Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor\, a work of torrential energy and daunting technical demands\, performed by Frost professor Naoko Takao\, praised for her compelling lyricism and fearless virtuosity. Reconstructed after its original manuscript was lost in 1917\, the concerto moves from sardonic wit to volcanic outburst across its four movements. After intermission\, Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 in E minor takes the stage\, completed in the uneasy months following Stalin’s death in 1953. Widely interpreted as both a musical portrait of the dictator and a reckoning with years of artistic repression\, the symphony travels from bleak introspection through sardonic waltz and relentless scherzo to a blazing\, hard-won affirmation. Together\, the two works chart a journey from individual struggle to collective catharsis\, under the baton of conductor Gerard Schwarz. The program also opens with Ravel’s Alborada del Gracioso.
