Presented by the Carol Marie Weber Family Foundation\, the series is part of GableStage’s education and outreach programming\, which also includes community performances and residencies at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and Holtz Children’s Hospital.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Miami’s Cuban Heritage Collection will bring together Cuban performance artist and activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and academic and activist Anamely Ramos for a Spanish-language conversation moderated by journalist Jorge Ramos. The panel will examine artistic freedom\, political dissent\, exile and freedom of expression in Cuba\, drawing on the participants’ experiences in the country’s independent artistic and civic movements. \n\n\n\nOtero Alcántara is a co-founder of Movimiento San Isidro\, an independent artistic movement established in opposition to Cuba’s Decree 349\, a 2018 measure restricting artistic activity. His work includes public performances challenging government restrictions on artistic expression\, including Drapeau\, in which he wore the Cuban flag in protest of flag legislation. \n\n\n\nRamos\, a former professor at Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte\, where she taught Cuban and African art for 12 years\, was dismissed following her public opposition to government censorship. She holds degrees in Art History and Cuban Cultural Processes. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by Jorge Ramos\, the former Univision News anchor\, author and Emmy Award-winning journalist whose career spans nearly four decades. Ramos currently hosts the podcasts “The Moment” with his daughter Paola and “Así Veo Las Cosas.” \n\n\n\nSponsored by the Amigos of the Cuban Heritage Collection\, the program will explore the intersection of art\, activism and freedom of expression in Cuba.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Miami’s Cuban Heritage Collection will hold its sixth New Directions in Cuban Studies conference at the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion in Coral Gables. The bilingual conference brings together advanced graduate students and emerging scholars from multiple disciplines to present new research on Cuba’s history\, culture\, politics\, economy and global connections. \n\n\n\nThe conference will feature a keynote address\, “Getting Beyond the Balancing Act: Cuban Studies Then and Now\,” by Lillian Guerra\, Ph.D.\, professor of Cuban and Caribbean history at the University of Florida and co-editor of the journal Cuban Studies. Guerra\, the author of five books\, will draw on her recent scholarship and oral history interviews to examine the evolution of Cuban studies\, the intellectual and political debates shaping the field\, and the challenges facing Cuba and Cuban communities worldwide. \n\n\n\nThroughout the conference\, participants will present research and discuss different methodologies and perspectives on Cuba and its global communities. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-presented by the Cuban Heritage Collection and the University of Miami’s Program in Cuban Studies\, with funding from The Goizueta Foundation. Additional support is provided by the university’s Wilbur L. and Jean L. The bilingual conference brings together advanced graduate students and emerging scholars from multiple disciplines to present new research on Cuba’s history\, culture\, politics\, economy and global connections. \n\n\n\nThe conference will feature a keynote address\, “Getting Beyond the Balancing Act: Cuban Studies Then and Now\,” by Lillian Guerra\, Ph.D.\, professor of Cuban and Caribbean history at the University of Florida and co-editor of the journal “Cuban Studies.” Guerra\, the author of five books\, will draw on her recent scholarship and oral history interviews to examine the evolution of Cuban studies\, the intellectual and political debates shaping the field\, and the challenges facing Cuba and Cuban communities worldwide. \n\n\n\nThroughout the conference\, participants will present research and discuss different methodologies and perspectives on Cuba and its global communities. \n\n\n\nThe event is co-presented by the Cuban Heritage Collection and the University of Miami’s Program in Cuban Studies\, with funding from The Goizueta Foundation. Additional support is provided by the university’s Wilbur L. and Jean L. Seating is assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and guests may be asked to share tables. The ticket price will be deducted from each guest’s tab.
