SUMMARY: Laura Dickerman in conversation with Stephanie Peral
DESCRIPTION:In Hot Desk\, debut novelist Laura Dickerman introduces Rebecca Blume and Ben Heath\, two rival editors forced to share a workspace on alternating days at a post-pandemic publishing house. Having never met in person\, they conduct their rivalry entirely through Post-it notes left on the pot of a shared cactus. When celebrated literary giant Edward David Adams\, known as the Lion\, dies and leaves his estate up for grabs\, their banter turns into an all-out competition for a career-defining prize. \n\n\n\nAs the stakes rise\, Rebecca uncovers a connection between her mother Jane and the Lion that pulls the story back four decades to 1982 Manhattan\, where Jane arrives in the city and meets Rose\, soon her closest friend. Two ambitious young women navigating a publishing world alive with art and ideas\, their friendship is tested by a single fateful day during an April blizzard that will alter the course of both their lives. \n\n\n\nHot Desk is a novel about ambition\, legacy\, and what we owe to the people who shaped us\, told with warmth\, humor\, and a genuine love for the world of books and the people who make them. Dickerman draws on her own experience as a longtime educator and her early days as an intern at The Paris Review to bring an insider’s eye to a world rarely depicted with this much affection and wit. \n\n\n\nThe author will be joined in conversation by Stephanie Peral\, Assistant Director of Programming and Events at Books and Books.

SUMMARY:Two Prosecutors
DESCRIPTION:Based on the novella by celebrated Soviet writer Georgy Demidov and directed by Sergei Loznitsa\, this film follows an idealistic young prosecutor played by Aleksandr Kuznetsov who is dispatched to investigate the unlawful imprisonment of a subversive writer held without evidence under the Stalin regime. What begins as an isolated case quickly reveals itself as part of something vast\, entrenched\, and deliberately obscured. \n\n\n\nLoznitsa\, one of cinema’s most unflinching chroniclers of totalitarian history\, brings Demidov’s story to the screen with characteristic restraint and moral precision. The film does not traffic in melodrama. It builds its horror methodically\, through paperwork\, testimony\, and silence\, showing how ordinary institutions become instruments of cruelty and how good intentions dissolve on contact with a system designed to perpetuate itself. \n\n\n\nA film about complicity\, courage\, and the limits of justice in a state that has made injustice its founding principle.

SUMMARY:Mozart and Schumann
DESCRIPTION:This chamber music program features two works rarely heard in concert: Mozart’s Piano Trio No. 4 in E major\, K. 542\, composed in 1788\, and Schumann’s Piano Trio No. 2 in F major\, Op. 80\, composed in 1847. \n\n\n\nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) composed more than 800 works across virtually every Western classical genre despite a life cut short at 35. His chamber music remains among the most admired in the repertoire\, recognized for melodic clarity\, formal elegance\, and harmonic depth. \n\n\n\nRobert Schumann (1810-1856) was a German composer\, pianist\, and music critic considered one of the defining voices of the Romantic era. His chamber works were shaped by the late quartets of Beethoven and the influence of Haydn and Mozart\, resulting in music marked by inventiveness and emotional intensity. His trio writing in particular reflects the full depth of his Romantic sensibility. \n\n\n\nDoors open 30 minutes prior to the performance. SUMMARY:Exhibition Opens to the Public: La Vida Es Un Carnaval de Barranquilla
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition brings a piece of Colombia’s largest cultural festival to South Florida. The Barranquilla Carnival was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003\, recognized for its centuries-old traditions\, dances\, music\, and its role as a defining symbol of identity for the Colombian Caribbean. \n\n\n\nAt the center of the exhibition is a collection of photographs by León Birbragher Vinkel (1940-2022)\, who spent more than 30 years documenting the Carnival’s main events and folkloric expressions\, including dances\, masquerades\, and costumes. His images capture the energy and community spirit of the celebration from the inside\, as someone who shared the passion of his fellow carnavaleros firsthand. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition expands beyond photography to include original costumes\, video\, and music\, creating a multisensory experience rooted in the Carnival’s blending of African\, Indigenous\, and European traditions.

SUMMARY:Birdstock @Tropical Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Birdstock returns as the signature closing concert of the 16th Annual Conservation Concert season\, bringing three distinctive South Florida acts to the Keystone stage for a night of live music that spans acoustic Americana to Glades-inspired folk-psych. Music begins at 7pm. Door proceeds support stewardship of the Steinberg Nature Center grounds. \n\n\n\nDave Bricker & Bruce Turkel open the evening in their Birdstock debut. The duo performs an acoustic set drawing from Americana\, blues\, folk\, and the Great American Songbook — Dave on guitar\, Bruce on harmonica — known for their warmth\, groove\, and improvisational approach to what they call their “Americlectic” song list. \n\n\n\nAcoustic Anarchy anchors the playbill. Phil Allen (lead guitar)\, Burt Bruton (bass)\, Larry Misrahi\, and Tony Sinatra (drums) deliver a mix of original music alongside Sixties and Seventies covers. The band is also underwriting and producing Birdstock this year. \n\n\n\nAnhinga-Anhinga closes the night with a finale set of Glades-inspired originals and Florida-themed covers. The six-piece — Spencer Fernandez (drums)\, Will Larkins (violin)\, Steven Parnelle (guitar)\, Michael Perez (vocals)\, Karim Suz (bass)\, and Max Taks (guitar) — blends folk\, psychedelia\, and indie rock into what they describe as “swamp-soaked sonic sunshine.” \n\n\n\nFood is provided by the Nacho Bizness Food Tent. The RNDC Donation Bird Bar will serve beer and wine. Sound system underwritten and staged by Acoustic Therapy.
