SUMMARY:Coral Gables Collects: Beanie Backus and His Imprint in South Florida Through the Allen Morris Collection
DESCRIPTION:The Coral Gables Museum presents “Coral Gables Collects: Beanie Backus and His Imprint in South Florida Through the Allen Morris Collection\,” on view from March 11 through May 24\, 2026\, in Gallery 109 and the Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition focuses on the work and influence of Florida artist Albert Ernest “Beanie” Backus (1906–1990)\, known for his paintings of Florida’s swamps\, waterways\, and wide landscapes. Though largely self taught\, Backus became an important figure in Florida’s mid twentieth century art scene and later served as a mentor to several young Black artists who would become known as the Florida Highwaymen. \n\n\n\nPart of the museum’s Coral Gables Collects series\, the exhibition highlights works from the collection of W. Allen Morris. Morris studied with Backus and maintained a family relationship with the artist for many years. The collection began with Morris’s father\, L. Allen Morris\, and was later expanded by Morris Jr. \n\n\n\nAmong the works included is a unique body cast worn by Morris after a plane accident that Backus later painted and signed with a Florida landscape. The exhibition spans several decades of Backus’s work and includes his well known Florida scenes\, religious imagery\, and paintings inspired by Oracabessa\, Jamaica\, where the artist spent extended periods capturing the island’s landscapes and local life. \n\n\n\nMembers: FreeAdults: $15Students/Seniors: $10Children (7-12): $8Children ≤ 6: FreeMilitary: Free

SUMMARY:Beyond the Surface: From Reality to Dream
DESCRIPTION:“Beyond the Surface: From Reality to Dream” explores how artists examine the boundaries between observation\, imagination\, and illusion. Moving between Realism\, Surrealism\, and Photorealism\, the exhibition presents works that reinterpret what we consider real. The pieces range from depictions of everyday life to dreamlike scenes and highly detailed paintings that resemble photography.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Medieval and Renaissance Castles of Périgord\, France
DESCRIPTION:Join the Coral Gables Museum for a lecture exploring the medieval and Renaissance architecture of the Périgord region in southwestern France. The presentation examines how history\, feudal authority\, religious institutions\, and regional craftsmanship shaped the architectural identity of the area. \n\n\n\nThe program highlights several important landmarks across the region\, including the cliff-top fortress of Château de Beynac\, the preserved medieval Château de Puymartin\, and the Romanesque abbey church of Abbaye de Saint-Amand-de-Coly. Additional sites discussed include Château de Hautefort\, known for its formal architectural design\, Château de Losse\, which reflects Renaissance influence\, and Château de Montaigne\, associated with the philosopher Michel de Montaigne. The lecture will also examine Château de Rastignac\, noted for its classical architectural inspiration. \n\n\n\nThrough these examples\, the presentation looks at how castles\, religious buildings\, and historic estates reflect the political\, cultural\, and architectural developments that shaped the Périgord from the medieval period through the Renaissance.
